China: A growing Organic Market with high Potential!

Organic food production has indeed become global, however the disparity between producer and consumer countries is growing. Demand for organic products is concentrated in affluent countries where production of organic foods is increasing at a relatively slow rate. China is one of this high potential markets, see some figures below to imagine the market opportunities:
Organic production in China
- 2.3 Mio ha certified area (2006)
- In addition, 1.1 Mio ha in conversion
- 2.1 Mio ha wild collection
- 1.600 organic farms/processors are certified
- main products: fresh and processed vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, oilseeds, nuts, mushrooms, herbs, tea, honey, new products: milk, eggs, meat and fish
- Export sales: about 350 Mio US-$
- 1.2% of total food export volume
- Important export provinces: Shandong, Liaoning (Dalian), Hebei, Jiangsu
- Domestic sales: about 750 Mio US-$
- Production grows 30-50% yearly
- 5% total exporting volume
- 1-3% of total domestic food sales
